Federal watchdogs recently announced plans to scrutinize employer websites to make sure they aren't violating accessibility standards for the vision and hearing impaired under new ADA regulations.
"Companies that do not consider accessibility in their website or product development will come to regret that decision, because we intend to use every tool at our disposal to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to technology and the worlds that technology opens up," says assistant attorney general for the Department of Justice's civil rights division, Thomas E. Perez.
Thomas E. Perez's remarks come on the heals of the DOJ's recent announcement that they are considering enforcing website accessibility standards under the ADA. The new rules will potentially cover government and private entities that "open their doors to the public" and apply to both public and internal websites, such as intranets. The Department of Labor is also considering making sure that applicants with disabilities can find and compete for jobs just like everyone else.
Stay tuned for further rulemaking details...and their impact to your organization.
