Your Responsibilities & The Census

In accordance with federal regulation (13 USC 223), owners and/or managers of Multifamily Housing properties must provide census takers with the names of tenants residing in their property when requested. Owners and managers must also provide information on vacant units if asked, but are not authorized to disclose additional tenant information. If the census taker needs more detailed information, they must request the information from HUD as stipulated in the Federal Privacy Act.

If unable to contact a household directly, census takers are instructed to ask the owner/manager to answer a few brief questions about the apartment (e.g. who was occupying the unit on April 1, 2010).
