Nursing Homes Randomly Selected to Be Focus of an Evaluation Related to Abuse

The Office of Inspector General, Office of Evaluation and Inspections has begun sending out letters to a number of nursing facilities to notify those providers that "OIG is conducting an evaluation that will determine whether nursing facilities complied with Federal requirements related to reporting allegations of abuse and ensuring that covered individuals report reasonable suspicions of crimes", and that they have been selected to participate.

OIG is conducting this evaluation in two separate parts to determine whether facilities are adequately complying with 42 CFR § 483.13(c) and the Social Security Act (SSA), Section 1150.

o   §483.13(c) Staff Treatment of Residents (F224* and F226**)

The facility must develop and implement written policies and procedures that prohibit mistreatment, neglect, and abuse of residents and misappropriation of resident property.

·         250 facilities have been randomly selected, using CASPER data, to participate in this nationwide study.

·         Facilities contacted must participate and provide the information requested.

·         Part 2 of the study will be a "follow-up" based on information found Part 1.
