Dollars already in short supply, which provide such things as a senior's ride to the doctor, a home-delivered meal or the in-home supports (such as adult day services) they require for independent living, may wind up on the cutting-room floor as proposed federal Older Americans Act funding is rolled up into omnibus appropriations legislation.
The Older Americans Act helps older individuals remain independent by preventing and alleviating malnutrition; managing chronic health conditions; protecting against abuse, exploitation and neglect and engaging older adults to help meet the needs of their communities. All of these services prevent premature placement of elders in nursing homes. Nursing home care, largely funded by Medicaid, is far more expensive than the services provided under the Older Americans Act.
