Caregiver Training Requirements Changing Soon - BHs and Home Care/Health

The Governor has given the full ‘go-ahead’ to DSHS and DOH to implement:
  • FBI fingerprint background checks beginning January 1, 2012;
  • New training requirements beginning January 7, 2012; and
  • Home care aide certification process beginning January 7, 2012
  • Please note – there is an intentional difference in these date notations.
Contact Julie Martin for additional information.
It is highly unlikely the legislature will overturn Initiative 1163 to de-implement or delay its implementation.

Certain long term care workers within boarding homes (assisted living), adult family homes and non-Medicare certified home health/care agencies are required to comply.

The department will be bearing the cost of the one-time only FBI background checks as they do with regular state background checks.  Processes and forms will be available online within the next 2 weeks – I will alert you when that information is posted.

The increased requirements for Continuing Education hours (10 to 12) take effect July 1, 2012.  There is a process for birthday-to-birthday timeframes – I will forward once it is posted online On-the-job training will be allowed to contribute to the 70 hours of basic training requirement, up to a maximum of 12 hours, beginning July 1, 2012.  This, as all other curriculum, must be pre-approved by the department.  I will forward forms, processes, etc. once they are available.

Aging Services of Washington is working with our vendors and partners, including Silver Chair, to facilitate their in-service and CE curriculum and trainer approvals with DSHS in order to minimize your compliance challenges. Contact Pat Sylvia if you have suggestions for training providers you would like pre-approved and we may be able to help.
