CMS released MLN Matters, which describes the CMS policy for outpatient therapy caps for Calendar Year
(CY) 2012 and announces the therapy caps for 2012 to be $1880.00. Be sure your
billing staff is aware of the update.
The Medicare and Medicaid Extenders Act (MMEA) of 2012 once
again extended the therapy caps exception process through CY 2011, and LeadingAge
continues to work with a coalition of therapy providers and consumer advocacy
organizations to make sure that the extension continues beyond December 31 of
this year.
The coalition testified before the House Energy and
Commerce Committee earlier this fall, at a hearing on a number of so-called
“tax extenders”, expressing the critical importance of continuing the
exceptions process in the absence of any other solution, such as repeal.
The coalition also sent a letter to the “Super Committee” recommending repeal
of the therapy caps.
With the demise of the “Super Committee”, attention
is likely to turn to the Medicare payment formula for physicians (the perennial
“doc fix”) as the legislative vehicle for extending the therapy caps exceptions
process.
