Electronic System Uses Sensors to Detect Incontinence

A new device called the Smart Incontinence Management System (SIMsystem) uses an electronic moisture sensor to detect incidents of incontinence among nursing home residents. When sensors detect moisture in disposable diapers, the SIMsystem sends the staff person on duty either a text message or a page, according to Simavita, the Australian manufacturer. The system also maintains a log of resident incontinence events to help staff detect patterns, choose appropriate continence aids or incorporate a toileting schedule into the care plan.
